Telltale Signs It’s Time To Replace Your Windows

As durable as high-quality windows are, the truth is that they won’t last forever, especially if they aren’t maintained well and if they constantly have to battle volatile temperature changes and weather conditions. Eventually, all windows must be removed and changed to a fresh set of panes. From reducing energy bills to improving security and comfort, replacing your windows has many benefits that could significantly improve your overall quality of life.

But how do you know when you’re due for a home window replacement? There are some obvious signs that it’s time to get them swapped, but other indications may not be as clear. Here are the telltale signs that tell you it’s time to replace your windows.

Troublesome noise pollution

Although windows can’t completely block out all sound coming from the outside, they should provide a certain acoustic isolation degree. If you can hear outside noise even when your windows are closed, it’s a sign that your windows’ soundproofing capabilities aren’t as efficient as they should be.

You can replace your current windows with soundproofing windows that dampen over 95% of external noise. These windows are significant if you live in a noisy area, such as highways, crowded streets, and airports.

Leaking windows

Keep an eye out for puddles of water or snow underneath windows, as this indicates a leaking window. Windows that leaks every time it rains or during the winter results from weak, deteriorated frames. This is one of the most obvious signs that you’re due for a complete window replacement.

A lack of updated safety features

Safety regulations on windows have changed multiple times over the years. If you haven’t replaced your windows in a few years or even decades, then now’s the perfect time to consider an overhaul to comply with these safety standards. This is especially important for young children, pets, or elderly residents. Examples of some updated safety features include double-hung windows, safety latches, and Charley bars.

Windows that are difficult to open and close

Windows that don’t open and close without a hitch are a mild inconvenience and a security risk at worst. If you have to force your windows open and bang them shut, it’s time to purchase new ones. The instant you feel that you have to work when opening and closing windows, that’s a sign that they’ve either been installed incorrectly or have far outlived their usefulness.

High energy bills

Windows that leak air can contribute to rising energy bills and must be changed. This is because your HVAC system will need to work much harder to maintain the temperature you’ve set it to. A window that can efficiently keep cold or hot air in means that your HVAC system can run as it’s meant to, thus lowering your energy usage and electric bill. You can tell if you’ve got a problem if your window feels much hotter or colder to the touch than the rest of your house.

Noticeable damage

Visible damage is perhaps the most evident indication that your windows aren’t up to snuff. If you notice cracks, mold, rotten wood, rust, and warped frames, you’re most definitely due for a window replacement.

Condensation

Condensation between the panes of glass in your windows is a sign of poor insulation and a broken seal, which is difficult to fix and requires that the entire window be removed to address the problem. In some instances, only the window panes must be switched out, but the whole window must be changed in most cases.

Home Renovation

If you plan to do an entire home makeover, you can’t leave your windows in your renovation plans. Since windows are one of the most notable features of the house, both inside and outside, outdated and unattractive windows won’t do. It’s important to consider them and switch them out for something that’ll better suit the style you intend for your home to look like to boost your home’s curb appeal.

Single-pane windows

Older, less modern homes usually have single-pane windows, which don’t work, and double- or triple-pane ones. Switching them out for more modern substitutes will help protect the house from volatile weather and extreme temperatures, lower energy costs, insulate external noise, and provide more safety and security.

Changing your windows has more benefits than drawbacks, so there’s no better time now. If you’re still on the fence, keep looking for these telltale signs that it’s time to replace them.
